Harris Hawk

(Parabuteo unicinctus) - 'Rio'

'Rio' is a very little male Harris Hawk who did not have the best start in life. He was abandoned in an aviary with his clutch mates, when found he was the only one who survived. The Falconer that recused him had to catch him up every day and treat his legs as he'd got so hungry he had started eating them.

Jason the falcon who rescued him did a great job getting him back to health but 'Rio' didn't appreciate the experience and started feather plucking after a year had gone by Jason realised he couldn't help him any further and a fresh start might help him get out of this habit.  So he came to join our team back November 2018, the feathers he had were broken or chipped, no muscle and frankly looking a sorry state for himself.

We spent the next few months just feeding him whatever he wants to eat, Quail, nice big chunks of Rat & he soon started to see humans as something a lot less scary than what he first thought. When the weather started to warm up in February we took him out on a safety line to start his training and he few back and forth 20 times, so the next day we flew him free and he's never looked back. Since then he's gone on to grow a whole bunch of new feathers and even start in Horse Back Falconry Shows.

Harris Hawks are the most popular bird of prey used in falconry because they are so intelligent. Living & hunting in cooperative packs in the wild & is commonly known as "Wolves of the Air". Habitats include dry to arid, mainly open country & grasslands with scattered trees such as sparse woodland & semi-desert, as well as marshes. Nesting in small trees, shrubby growth & even on cacti. Found across America, Chile & into Mexico.
